Oscars: Academy to add achievement in popular film category

The Film Academy has announced a number of changes to the Oscars, including the introduction of a new category.

From next year, there will be an award for great achievement in popular film, the first time a new Oscar has been introduced since best animated film in 2001.

In a letter sent to members, the Academy also announced that the ceremony would now be kept to under three hours, which means that some of the 24 categories will be announced during breaks and then added to the ceremony later on. This year’s ceremony, which saw The Shape of Water take the top prize, ran to just under four hours.

“We are trying to produce an amazing show in three hours, presenting a more enjoyable Oscars to our viewers worldwide,”the letter reads.

The moves are seen as new ways for the Oscars to attract more viewers.

In 2009, the best picture race was opened up from five to a possible 10 nominees. Since then, Avatar, Inception, The Martian, Gravity and Toy Story 3 have all received nominations.

While details of the popular film category are yet to be announced, it could be a way for superhero films to finally break through. In a later paper, the Academy made it clear that a film could be nominated as both popular film and best picture.

Next year’s Oscars will take place on 23 February, early favourites including Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born, Barry Jenkin’s Moonlight follow-up If Beale Street Could Talk and the La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong film Firist Man.

Question:

Do you think this change will attract more people to watch the ceremony on TV? Give your reasons in about 30 words.

How a 16-year-old girl started a multimillion dollar social network

Juliette Brindak started a social networking site for tweens when she was 16, and it’s doing better than ever.

Miss O And Friends receives 10 million monthly visits, a twenty-fold increase from its start in 2005. It’s also worth around $15million, according to early Investor Procter &Gamble.

When she was ten, Brindak drew characters for a set of five friends she called “Cool Girls,” who were all inspired by real-life girls. The main cool girl, Miss O, stands for her younger sister Olivia. The set of “Cool Girls” finally became “Miss O And Friends.”

In the beginning--like many startups--Brindak reached out to family members and friends for investment money. Her mother, a designer, brought her drawings to life while her father, who has a background in business, helped her create the company.

What started out as a few sketches on the way home from a family vacation quickly turned into a good place for million of tweens and teens. The site was considered the third largest girls-only Web site in 2011.

Now, at 23, Brindak doesn’t know what tween girls are looking for, so she uses the site as a way to understand their needs. Through polls, quizzes, and the Girl2Girl wall, members are able to keep Brindak updated.

“In November 2011, girls were writing on the Girl2Girl wall asking if we could get them tickets to a One Direction concert. This was the first time we had ever heard about One Direction and we were able to create a concert/ sponsorship with Simon& Schuster’s ‘Dork Diaries’ books and winning tickets.”

She’s made it possible --through competitions--for her users to see stars, such as Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers,in concert. Now, she’s offering an all expenses paid trip to Canada for four lucky fans to see Taylor Swift’s show.

Question:

After reading the story of the 16-year-old girl, what can you learn from her?

Colorado school district gives students 4-day weeks

Many of us wish we could have longer weekends , but for about 18,000 students in Colorado,  that wish is coming true. A school district outside Denver has decided to shorten its week to four days, and the first school year on this new timetable just started, CBS Denver reports. It began on Tuesday, August 14, because the day students get off is everyone’s least favorite : Monday.

While this may sound like a dream come true, it means students will have to sit through longer school days to make up for the hours they’ve lost, according to The Denver Post.

The decision wasn’t made just to give students more days off, though; it had practical purposes: to save money and attract better teachers. The district says that it will save $1 million by not having buses on Mondays and spending less on things like electricity and water. Parents may be picking up some of the cost of this change, though, since many will now need to stay home with their kids or pay for childcare.

This isn’t the first district in the state to introduce a four-day week: 55% of the state’s schools do this, but most of them are in the countryside, according to The Denver Post. Several schools in Oklahoma made the same move earlier this year, and some of them told CBS News reports that more qualified teachers applied after the change. Around 560 districts in 25 states include schools with four-day weeks, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, but evidence is mixed on how the different timetable affects students’ performance.

Question:

If you have four-day weeks, do you think your performance in study will be affected?

Last Christmas, when I was in the fourth grade and my brother was in the first grade, our school held its yearly Holiday Shop. At the Holiday Shop students can buy things like necklaces, key chains, and other small items for their friends and family as Christmas gifts. Since my brother really wanted to take part, my mom gave him two dollars to buy his Christmas gifts.
My mom didn’t know that he had picked out a special necklace for her. When he got home from the Holiday Shop that day, he couldn’t wait to show it to me. He pulled out a little green box and opened it. Inside was a gold chain with a little red flower and a man-made diamond next to gold letters that spelled out,“Grandmother”.
“Wow,” I said.“It’s beautiful.” Since my brother was in the first grade and was just learning to read, he didn’t realize that the necklace said “Grandmother” instead of “Mother”. I knew that on Christmas morning, when he found out he had bought the wrong necklace, he would be very unhappy, so I said nothing more about it. My brother ran and put the necklace under his bed to hide it from Mom until Christmas morning.
When he wasn’t looking, I took the necklace and put it in my backpack. The next day I took it back to school and asked the woman who ran the Holiday Shop if I could change it for the “Mother” necklace. She said yes. When I got home that day, I put the necklace under my brother’s bed.
When my mom opened it up on Christmas morning, my brother was so exalted! My mom’s eyes were filled with joy. She knew what had happened, which made the necklace even more special to her!
My brother still does not know what I did, but I knew I had done the right thing.
